Catastrophe claims assessors: hail, flood & storm

A single hailstorm, flood or veld fire can produce hundreds of claims overnight. Insurers need assessors who can mobilise quickly, prioritise the most urgent cases and keep the quality of every assessment consistent.

Sterling Assessing handles non-motor catastrophe claims across South Africa, and our in-house claims management system lets us track large volumes of files hour by hour so none are left waiting.

Our approach

How we handle catastrophe events

  1. 01

    Prompt contact and site visit

Once instructed, we contact the insured, explain the process and arrange an inspection. Our assessors travel to the site anywhere in South Africa.

  2. 02

    Triage and scale

After an event we prioritise uninhabitable homes and urgent safety issues, deploy assessors to the affected area, and keep every file visible to the insurer through our claims management system.

  3. 03

    Quantification against the policy

Quotes, invoices and replacement values are tested against market rates and the policy wording, including limits, excesses and any under-insurance.

  4. 04

    Clear report and recommendation

The insurer receives a concise, evidence-based report with photographs and a settlement recommendation, and every step is tracked hourly in our own claims management system.

FAQ

Catastrophe Claims: common questions

Do you assess motor catastrophe claims?

No. Our catastrophe work covers non-motor claims: buildings, contents, commercial property and similar.

How do you handle large numbers of claims after a storm?

We triage claims by urgency, group inspections by area, and track every file hourly in our own claims management system so insurers always know the status of each claim.

What should policyholders do straight after a hailstorm or flood?

Make the property safe, take photographs of the damage, prevent further damage where possible (keep receipts for emergency repairs) and report the claim to the insurer or broker as soon as possible.
