Building & engineering claims assessors
Damage to a building is rarely as simple as it looks. Water ingress, cracking or fire damage can have several causes, and only some of them are covered by a buildings policy. Sterling Assessing inspects the property in person, establishes what actually happened and puts a fair, well-supported figure on the repair.
We handle buildings combined claims, fire damage to buildings, property loss of any nature, and structural or civil engineering claims of any size, from a single dwelling to commercial and industrial sites.

Our approach
How we assess building claims
- 01
Prompt contact and site visit
Once instructed, we contact the insured, explain the process and arrange an inspection. Our assessors travel to the site anywhere in South Africa.
- 02
Cause of loss, not just the damage
We separate sudden, insured events from wear and tear, gradual deterioration and maintenance issues, and bring in structural or specialist engineers where a claim needs it.
- 03
Quantification against the policy
Quotes, invoices and replacement values are tested against market rates and the policy wording, including limits, excesses and any under-insurance.
- 04
Clear report and recommendation
The insurer receives a concise, evidence-based report with photographs and a settlement recommendation, and every step is tracked hourly in our own claims management system.
FAQ
Building & Engineering Claims: common questions
Do you assess both residential and commercial buildings?
Yes. We assess homes, sectional and commercial properties, industrial buildings and civil engineering works, for claims of any size.
Will a structural engineer be involved?
Where the cause or extent of damage is structural, we involve a qualified engineer and include their findings in our report so the insurer can make an informed decision.
What should the insured have ready for the inspection?
Photographs taken at the time of the loss, any repair quotes or invoices, and access to the damaged areas. If temporary repairs were done to prevent further damage, keep the receipts.
